; The article discusses the question of interrelation between the promotion of Miaenergism and its influence on the sense of religious identity of non-Chalcedonian Christians. The purpose of the article if to point that the promotion of Miaenergism was perceived by Miaphysites as an challenge for their religious identity formed in the period after the Council of Chalcedon (451) on the basis of refutation of Chalcedon, absolute loyalty to the teachings of their Patriarchs, especially to Christological notions of Cyril of Alexandria. The promotion of Miaenergism became the stimulus that caused the crystallization of a sense of religious identity of the Miaphysites. The promotion of Miaenergism strongly influenced a sense of the Miaphysite political identity, opposite to Byzantine government.
; The Nicene Council did not put an end to the Arian polemic. After the Council there came a long period of the struggle for reception of the Nicene Christology. The controversy became a subject of an interest for the Emperor since it was perceived as a threat for the imperial unity. For this reason, the custom of the Emperor to intervene in the ecclesiastical affairs began to increase even in the field of doctrine. Such situation evoked a reaction of bishops and became an opportunity for defining the role of the Emperor in the Church. There are two main standpoints in this regard in the fourth century: one of the pro-Arian bishops and the other of the anti-Arian bishops. The chief purpose of this paper was to illustrate the pro-Arian bishops' standpoint concerning the Emperor in the Church. The analysis of historical sources and literature proved that the attitude of the pro-Arian bishops towards the Emperor was the position neither of an absolute submission nor the whole independence. Their model of relations between the Church and state was influenced primarily by Eusebius of Caesarea, who transformed to the Christianity the ancient Hellenistic political theory and Hebrew view of authority. In the context of these ideas the Emperor as the alive law had a special role in the Church. It was manifested especially on the synods. The pro-Arians allowed the Emperor to intervene even in the sphere of Church doctrine. Their attitude towards the Emperor differed greatly from the model elaborated during the ante-Nicene period. On the other hand, the pro-Arians tried to remain faithful to the teaching of Church Tradition. In this perspective they could not consider the Emperor as the head of the Church. The end of the Arian controversy did not discharge the Church of intervention of the Emperor, but underscored the role of the Emperor in the Church. The Eastern Church in the period of reception of the Nicene Christology was programmed to be dependent on the Emperor. Thus, the pro-Arian attitude towards the Emperor sowed the seeds of future Byzantine Caesaropapism.
; The Activity of the Pro-Arian Christians of the Fourth Century as an Attempt of Self-Affirmation The article analyzes the activity of the Pro-Arian Christians of the fourth century. It was proved that from the beginning of the Arian controversy in the fourth century not only clergy but also laymen did not remain aloof from it. Involvement of the laity in the dispute contributed to the bishops because people strengthened the position of the religious community headed by a bishop. Sources give scant information about the active participation of the laity in theological discussions. Instead, they focus on their active actions to defend or protect their own religious position. A character of activity depended on the moral values of their spiritual leader. Historical sources present activity of the pro-Arians of the fourth century in major cities of the Eastern Empire. Having examined the activity of the pro-Arian Christians of Alexandria, Constantinople and Antioch we may assert that the activity of the pro-Arians was not good organized and systematic, but spontaneous and directed by the spiritual leaders supported by the government. Their activity was mostly manifested in violence, but it should be noted that the violence was organized by separate influential people who made use of random people of dubious moral reputation. Among them were even non-Christians. Most of the pro-Arians were neither involved in violence nor stopped it. It seems that the use of violence by minority of pro-Arians stemmed not only from the lack of a clear theological reasoning, but also from intellectual passivity and moral weakness of most pro-Arians. Many pro-Arians were religiously indifferent. They could belong to the pro-Arian group because of selfish motives, as the pro-Arians were supported by the government. But there were also manifested glimpses of religious identity and Christian moderation among the pro-Arians. However, they were immature. The activity of the pro-Arians did not bring them self-affirmation, but rather brought Arianism to divisions and degradation.
; The Participation of the Laity in the Arian Controversy of the IVth Century. The article analyzes the participation of the laity in the Arian controversy of the IVth century. It is shown that the bishops tried to involve lay people to debate to strengthen bishop's position in the fight against the adversary. The participation of the laity was shown a small degree in constructive discussion. Much more they were active in the riots caused by controversy. On the one hand the participation of the laity expressed itself in violence, on the other in humble submission to violence. Religious riots involving lay people caused that emperors intervened in the dispute, so the merely theological dispute became the political one with religious background. Involuntarily lay people became hostage to the bishop's inability to come to an agreement in doctrinal matters. Pro-Arian laity gradually retreated from their leaders. That indicates a weak religious identity of the former and a weak theological arguments of the latter. Instead pro-Nicaean laity remained loyal to their faith despite the persecution and disloyalty of some of its bishops. The solid position of the pro-Nicaean laity became crucial in combatting Arianism.
; The Intervention of the Emperors in Church Doctrinal Affairs in the Context of the Arian Controversy of the IVth Century. The article analyzes the method of interference of the first Christian emperors in the doctrinal sphere of Church. The cause of the imperial intervention was an attempt to resolve the religious conflict that had arisen from the Arian debate. Emperor Constantine the Great sympathized with the pro-Arian bishops and confirmed the decisions of the pro-Arian synods, which would have put an end to the theological misunderstanding. Constantius, son of Constantine, also sympathized with the pro-Arian confession. He didin't not only convene synods, but also took part in them. Synods composed new creeds. Constantius persecuted anti-Arian Christians to strengthen the pro-Arian confession. Emperor Valens strongly promoted the spread of the existing pro-Arian creeds. He persecuted those who did not accept them. Emperor Theodosius by the authority of his government ordered to adhere to the Nicene Creed. So at least the first Christian emperors were interfering indirectly with the Church doctrinal sphere in the context of the Arian controversy.
